10 years ago, I shared that my wife, Tanja, and I were celebrating our 24th wedding anniversary — and the success of Hughes Private Capital’s Lease 2 Own buyer program.

This has been quite the week and it isn’t even over.  Tanja has decided to stay with me for the last 24 years.  We celebrated our 24th wedding anniversary on Tuesday but that’s not all.  Our first Lease 2 Own Buyer is buying his home this Thursday after just a short year and a half.

Isn’t it romantic to report on our first Lease 2 Own Buyer buying their house and my anniversary of 24 years!  We celebrated by going to dinner on our anniversary with all 4 of our kids and my Dad.  Now that is romantic!  Okay, maybe I lack the romantic gene but it was fun to have all the family in one place — at one time.   Many of you, I know, can relate.

As for our Lease 2 Own Buyer buying his home, this is almost like having one of our first kids leave the house.  Very exciting!  It leaves a larger portion of the cake for me.  Wait… that doesn’t make any sense.  No, it’s exciting because it is proof of concept.

(Some of you have been around long enough to remember those days, but for those who joined us more recently, Lease 2 Owns is the fund that predates the Buy & Hold Fund.)

You can tell how excited we were by this milestone.  Now, a decade later, it’s amazing how much has changed in that time.

My wife, Tanja, and I got married 34 years ago this month.

I’m pleased to share that my wife has continued to decide to stay with me and we are celebrating our 34th anniversary this month.  My family has had a lot to be thankful for.  All of my kids are well into adulthood now and doing amazing things — Hayden is in the Air Force and happily married; Dexter joined the Hughes Capital team this year as a market researcher; and Tate runs his own flooring business.  Last year, we became first-time grandparents when my daughter, Kayla, welcomed her son, Arlo.  She’s expecting another boy next year and we couldn’t be more thrilled.  It’s amazing to witness the people my children have become in the last 10 years.

And on the subject of growth, Hughes Private Capital has also grown substantially in the same timeframe.  Our company now has more than 125 team members — I still remember when our team was small enough to all fit around one standard-sized coffee table.

We no longer do Lease 2 Owns, but mostly because that program led us to a breakthrough for how we could do real estate investment better and on a national level — eventually leading to the creation of the Buy & Hold Fund, which we’ve managed for several years now.  We knew that if we put in the groundwork and thought strategically about our company operations and processes, we could become that end-to-end option for people.

The Buy & Hold Fund has allowed us to build a family of investors from around the country. From there, we found more efficient ways to do 1031 Exchanges with our Secured Portfolio and realized that was where we truly shined.  Between the success of those funds, Liquidity Accounts, Hughberry Homes, and so much more, we’re empowered to continue thinking BIG.

Here at HPC, we talk a lot with our team about our BHAGs — our Big, Hairy, Audacious Goals.  It might not be the prettiest phrase but it’s certainly a memorable one.  What it comes down to is that there is nothing you can’t accomplish if you put your time, energy, and hard work into it.  If I’ve learned anything over the past 10 years, it’s that.

I look forward to the next 10 years and hope that, when it’s time to celebrate my 44th anniversary, I’ll be able to say that Tanja decided to stick around for a while longer.
