Happy Thanksgiving from Hughes Private Capital! In the spirit of the holiday, I wanted to share an annual update about one of my favorite organizations: Honor Flight Nevada.
Honor Flight is a national organization with a local branch here in Reno. They host events year-round to honor and celebrate our veterans. Their big event of the year is a trip to Washington, D.C., where veterans get to visit the inspiring war memorials honoring their service.
My family and I served as Guardians (volunteers) for previous Honor Flights and let me tell you, there is nothing like it. It is an absolute privilege to be a part of this experience, and it is moving beyond words. My daughter, Kayla, wrote this piece about her trip in 2018 and we revisit this article every year around Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving. Be forewarned that you’ll get emotional reading it!
Speaking with veterans and hearing their stories really reminds you how much they’ve sacrificed for all of us. It’s a debt that can never truly be repaid. But you can join us in recognizing their immense dedication to our country by supporting Honor Flight Nevada. If you want to donate your time or money, you can do so here.
Additionally, there are two seasonal events you can attend:
Gold Star Tree
Now through January 2023
The name of the tree refers to Gold Star families who have lost a loved one in combat. The tree is decorated with both traditional Christmas ornaments and photos of local veterans who lost their lives in wars. This beautiful tree is on display at the Atlantis Casino, 2nd floor outside of the Bistro Napa, until early January 2023. You can read more about the Gold Star Tree here.
Honor Flight December Mission
December 4th, 2022
Give the veterans returning from their December trip to Washington D.C. a warm welcome home! Go to the Reno-Tahoe Airport at 11:25 a.m. on December 4th, 2022, and be a part of the welcome crowd.
Do it for them. But also, do it for yourself. You’ll be surprised at how inspirational and moving this honoring event can be.
